Program Information

  • Trainees should refer to their government sponsor for registration periods. If you are not sponsored by DC or Maryland programs, please contact our box office for pricing schedule.

    Costs for 1 week intensive DMA is $250 per week.

  • All trainees are required to be on time by 10:00am on June 26th 2023. All participants are required to have the following:

    • Placement letter from sponsoring agency assigning you to our studios before entering the facility.

    • State issued ID or School ID

    • Mobile Device with data plan

    • Headphones are required for all mobile devices

    • Water Bottle

    • Bring lunch. Trainees are restricted from leaving the site during Orientation. They may order food from off-site and pick it up in front at rideshare location. Please plan accordingly.

  • Those coming from Summer Youth Employment Programs on contract are reserved seats in our programs and must meet certification rules for their respective sponsor. For most groups that fall under DC, please visit www.summerjobs.dc.gov to check your status.

    Placement into a particular training is based on the participant’s skill level and desire to complete orientation goals in week 1. Spaces are not guaranteed until you are selected by a Trainer at end of orientation week.

    Please complete all request onboarding items to ensure you are ready fo the next step. Onboard objectives are provided during the first week of the program.

  • Participants that are not sponsored. Enrollment is $250 per week and due at least one week before sessions begin. Those on direct training payment are automatically registered and can select up to 3 trainings plus receive private studio time for focused in-studio work. Discounts and other incentives may be available and will be listed if applicable.

    A non-refundable fee of $99 is required to reserve a seat. Seats are very limited.

  • Orientation week is where you are assigned to a trainer or project. During orientation, you learn what types of jobs are available and what it would be like to train in them and schedules.

    Ensure that you have downloaded zoom. Zoom is our main video messaging tool. The studio will email you information as the program date gets closer.

    Please note that some managers may use a different video message for their course, however, you will also be notified of zoom meetings that you’ll need to attend if working remotely.

  • Participate in various workshops ranging from music production, visual arts, photography and more. Our courses are designed based on current trends and will change from year to year.

    Training workshops take place over the course of 4 to 5 weeks immediately after orientation.

    If you’d like to join a workshop, each workshop is priced from $35 to $100 depending on the type of workshop.

  • Our final week allows everyone an opportunity to showcase their work at our summer showcase, usually held during the last week of the program.

  • Individuals that do not want to train in a speciality area may either request a transfer immediately or join our house crews to earn their hours by completing some or a combination of the options below:

    • Attend up to 2 events per week for a total of 2 full workdays. Examples of events are things like movie nights and games days.

    • Maintenance of facility and groundskeeping

    • Car Washing and Detailing

    There are no telework or hybrid options for those not assigned to a trainer. Worksite is required to submit your timecard, so please plan accordingly in your decision to train or not.

  • To request a transfer to another site, please note the process can take up to two weeks to complete. To start the process:

    1. Download the 2023 DOES Transfer form from their website or you may download the form from our site.

    2. Once you have received a transfer recommendation from our site, provide it to your DOES OYP rep.

    3. You are still required to show up for your assigned worksite in order to get your timesheet updated.

    NOTE: When you request a transfer to another worksite, DOES will need time to make the change and place you at another site. If you do not have another site ready to accept you, it will further delay you.

    While in transfer status, you will not be paid if you do not show up for your assigned work. Simply not showing up will result in termination from our worksite, and you will not have hours counted.

6 - Week Training Plan

  • Once we receive placements from our sponsor, you’ll be registered with us and will receive additional program information as program dates get closer.

  • Week 1: Orientation and Studio Selection

    Focus: Welcome and Exploration

    Details: Introduce the program, staff, and the studios. Participants explore the recording, hair, podcast, and events studios through interactive tours and demonstrations. The week ends with participants selecting their preferred studio based on interest and aptitude, with assignments made accordingly.

    Our first day is in person at StudioPlace located 4719 Stamp Rd, Temple Hills, Md 20748. Upon arrival, please provide your placement letter from your sponsor assigning you to our worksite.

  • Focus: Immersive Introduction

    Details: Participants start their chosen studio track with foundational workshops. They receive an overview of available resources and start utilizing their studio time. This week, instructors guide trainees on setting goals and starting simple projects to familiarize themselves with the studio space and equipment.

  • Focus: Developing Technical Skills

    Trainees dive deeper into their studio’s craft, learning more advanced techniques and concepts. They begin to use their 10 hours of studio time for independent or small group projects, with mentorship from instructors to refine their skills and creative visions.

  • Focus: Expanding Expertise

    Details: This week introduces advanced techniques and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration. Trainees are encouraged to think about how their studio work can integrate with or enhance projects in other studios, using their studio time to explore these collaborative opportunities.

  • Focus: Career Skills and Project Refinement

    Details: Focus shifts towards preparing trainees for the professional aspects of their craft, including portfolio development, marketing, and networking within their studio’s industry. Trainees also dedicate significant studio time to advancing their capstone projects, with feedback sessions from peers and mentors.

  • Focus: Finalization and Presentation

    Details: Trainees use their studio time to finalize their capstone projects, preparing for the end-of-program showcase. This week is critical for polishing projects, practicing presentations, and ensuring their work reflects their learning and creativity. The showcase serves as a platform for demonstrating their achievements to an audience of peers, program staff, and invited industry professionals.

Types of Work

  • The Visual Arts program with a focus on Digital Arts is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive training experience in the use of digital tools and techniques for visual arts. The program spans over several weeks and covers a range of topics such as the introduction to the program, safety protocols, tools and equipment, and techniques for digital art making.

    One of the courses offered in the program is Canva Create, which is a graphic design tool used for creating designs for print or digital media. Participants will learn the basics of graphic design, including typography, layout, color theory, and image editing, and how to apply these principles in their designs using Canva.

    Throughout the program, participants will have the opportunity to work on individual projects under the guidance of experienced instructors and receive feedback and support from their peers through group discussions. They will also have a chance to showcase their works and explore commissioning opportunities during the final presentation week.

    The Visual Arts program with a focus on Digital Arts is a great opportunity for anyone looking to develop their skills in digital art making and graphic design. The inclusion of Canva Create as a course in the program provides participants with a practical skill that can be applied in a variety of fields, such as advertising, marketing, and social media.

  • When it comes to digital marketing, understanding your target audience is key to success. By analyzing consumer behaviors, interests, and preferences, businesses can tailor their marketing strategies to resonate with their ideal customers. Effective digital marketing involves creating compelling content, utilizing engaging visuals, and leveraging the power of social media platforms and online advertising. By connecting with the right audience through targeted messaging and optimized campaigns, businesses can maximize their online presence and drive meaningful engagement and conversions.

  • Creatives intersted in film, broadcast, music business will receive a one week training course on setting up basic studio sessions on various setups ranging from streamyard, bandlab and other online programs. How to setup podcasts and equipment, I/O, setting up the microphone, midi, incorporation of techniques to attract customers, industry trends, and other studio management type work. Creatives in this training can book studio sessions for their personal projects once they complete the basic requirements and have been informed by the Director that they are ready to start. Projects can be presented for final presentation.

  • The Music Production Basic program is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to music production for individuals who are new to the field. The program covers the fundamental concepts and techniques used in music production, including recording, mixing, and editing.

    Participants will be introduced to various music production tools and software, and will have hands-on experience working with them to create their own music productions. Throughout the program, participants will receive feedback and guidance from experienced instructors to help them improve their skills and develop their own unique style.

    Upon completion of the Music Production Basic program, participants will have a strong foundation in music production, and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue further education or career opportunities in the field.

  • This program highlights a range of dynamic dance techniques, such as Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary, and Hip Hop, taught by a group of accomplished young instructors. Our diverse and inclusive environment encourages all participants to immerse themselves in the world of dance, nurturing discipline, teamwork, and creativity. This initiative goes beyond a simple dance program; it's a transformative journey that culminates in a vibrant showcase of talent. Participants will have the opportunity to express their growth, resilience, and artistry, underscoring the significance of artist rights and the profound commitment required in the performing arts.

  • Participants begin with an orientation emphasizing punctuality, accountability, and respect, along with understanding personal learning styles. The program progresses with hands-on training in basic and advanced sewing techniques, utilizing a variety of tools and materials. Participants actively engage in projects, honing their skills and creativity under guidance. The program concludes with a final presentation, showcasing the participants' acquired skills.

  • The hair braiding workshop is designed to provide individuals with a comprehensive training experience in the art of hair braiding. The workshop spans over five weeks and covers a range of topics such as the history of hair braiding, different types of braids, braiding techniques, and product selection.

    During the first week of the workshop, participants will learn about the history of hair braiding and its significance in different cultures. They will also learn about the different types of hair and scalp conditions and how to properly prepare hair for braiding.

    In the following weeks, participants will have the opportunity to practice various braiding techniques, such as cornrows, box braids, and twists, and will receive guidance and feedback from experienced instructors. They will also learn about the different types of hair products used in hair braiding, and how to select the appropriate products for different hair types.

    Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to work with different hair textures and lengths, and will learn about the different styles and designs that can be created with hair braiding. They will also learn about the importance of maintaining healthy hair and scalp during and after the braiding process.

    During the final week of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and work on a final project. They will receive feedback and guidance from their instructors and peers, and will have the opportunity to further develop their skills and knowledge in hair braiding.

    Upon completion of the hair braiding workshop, participants will have a strong foundation in hair braiding, and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue further education or career opportunities in the field. They will also have the ability to braid their own hair or the hair of others in various styles and designs.

    Overall, the hair braiding workshop is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning the art of hair braiding and looking to develop their skills in the field. It provides participants with a comprehensive training experience, guidance and feedback, and practical knowledge that can be applied in various settings.

The program spans over 6 weeks and covers a range of topics such as the introduction to the program, safety protocols, tools and equipment, and techniques for painting and mural making.

    Participants will have the opportunity to work on individual projects under the guidance of experienced instructors and receive feedback and support from their peers through group discussions. They will also have a chance to showcase their works and explore commissioning opportunities during the final presentation week.

    For those who have current works in progress at home or completed, they may submit for a residency where their works will be transformed into an assignment.

    The Visual Arts program with a focus on murals is a great opportunity for anyone looking to develop their skills in mural painting and industrial arts, and those interested in pursuing a career in the arts.

  • The Bartender Certification Preparation class is designed to provide individuals who are 18 years or older with a comprehensive training experience in bartending and preparing them to obtain their bartender certification. The program spans over several weeks and covers a range of topics such as cocktail recipes, mixing techniques, bar equipment, and customer service.

    Participants will learn the basics of cocktail preparation, including how to make classic and modern cocktails, how to create their own signature drinks, and how to garnish and present cocktails. They will also learn about the different types of alcohol and their uses, how to properly use bar equipment, and how to provide excellent customer service.

    Throughout the program, participants will have the opportunity to practice their skills in a simulated bar environment under the guidance of experienced instructors. They will receive feedback and support on their techniques, as well as on their communication and interpersonal skills.

    Upon completion of the Bartender Certification Preparation class, participants will be prepared to take the bartender certification exam and obtain their certification. They will also have a strong foundation in bartending, and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue further education or career opportunities in the bartending industry.

    Overall, the Bartender Certification Preparation class is a great opportunity for anyone who is 18 years or older, interested in bartending, whether as a career or a hobby, and looking to obtain their bartender certification. It provides participants with a comprehensive training experience that combines practical skills development, feedback and support, and preparation for certification.

  • "We understand that not everyone is into training and just wants to show up and work. Great! No problem! Being assigned to the house team provides an opportunity for those that are not necessarily interested in training or would like to do jobs that are not Arts Focus training; types of positions are available. Please make it known during the first week of the program if you'd like to remain on-site but not train with the groups.
